In 1902, the Beachy Head Lighthouse was brought into service at the base of the cliffs after Belle Toute was abandoned in 1899. It took two years to complete and required 3,660 tons of Cornish granite to construct the tower. Beachy Head Lighthouse was automated in June 1983 and the lighthouse keepers were no longer needed.
